Don’t take any overt actions alone.

I must emphasize that abusive relationships are very dangerous. People are sometimes killed. I’m not saying this to scare you. I’m telling you this so you take it all very seriously and be very careful. Don’t leave certain books or brochures lying around. Be discrete about your inquiries until you’ve finally decided what you’re going to do. And don’t take action without outside help.

Now just the fact that you think you might be in an abusive relationship means that your relationship probably needs some attention. Abuse or no abuse, things are not going ideally. The worst thing to do is keep it to yourself. The good news is that many relationships can improve and even abusive ones can progress toward greater equality.
